Recommended spending
Your numbers here are saved automatically — locally in this browser — and gathered on the Summary page, your one-place lookup across Personal economy.
Like the split? Use these numbers as a starting point in the Budget planner and build your real year around them.
Recommended spending, split for your city
Enter your total monthly payout and get a recommended split across the cost posts that eat everyone's paycheck: housing, food, transport, fixed bills, fun — and savings, which is a cost too, just one that pays you back. Loans are deliberately left out, so the last line shows what's left to cover the minimum payments on any loans.
It answers questions like 'how much of my salary should go to rent', 'how much should I save each month' and 'how much should I spend on food and fun' — a rough estimate on purpose: the same paycheck buys very different lives in New York and in a small Norwegian village, so picking your city scales the housing share by its cost of living. Use the numbers as a starting point for sensible choices — and carry the ones you like into the Budget planner.
Good to know
- Savings is deliberately on the list — paying yourself first is the whole trick.
- Loans are left out on purpose: the leftover line is what covers their minimum payments.
- Expensive cities get a bigger housing share and a smaller leftover — the same math, different rents.
How it works
- 1Enter your total monthly payout — salary, benefits, side income, everything.
- 2Pick your currency and your city — the housing share follows the city's cost of living.
- 3Read the suggested split: housing, food, transport, fixed bills, fun and savings.
- 4The last line shows what's left for minimum payments on loans and surprises.
